Preventing Burnout: Self-Care Strategies for Doers to Maintain Energy and Well-Being

Preventing Burnout: Self-Care Strategies for Doers to Maintain Energy and Well-Being

SELF-CARE FOR DOERS: IT'S ESSENTIAL

Self-care gets a bad rap by Doers, because they rarely see the need for it. While bubble baths and deluxe pedicures may sound nice, they secretly believe they’re a waste of time. Who wants to lie around all day getting pampered when there’s so much that needs to be done?

Right?

As Alan Kraft says in Good News for Those Trying Harder, “To those who love to be productive, rest is a lot of work.”

Self-care, in the form of rest, is particularly difficult for those who love to be productive, but I hope you’ll agree that even Doers need a break. You need to replenish your energy, refresh your mind, and restore your soul so that you’ll be able to do more for your family and professional life.

Become aware of your Doer-specific energy drainers and gainers. They are unique to your design. If your best friend or boss are different personality types (and usually they are), they probably won’t be drained by these stressors or energized by these self-care acts like you are. Don’t worry, nothing is wrong with you. And nothing is wrong with them either because God made us all unique.

And if you're curious about your own level of self-care, download and take the Self-Care Quiz to find out today.

TOP 6 DOER ENERGY DRAINERS:

  1. Passivity. Those who let stuff happen, as opposed to make stuff happen, confound you.
  2. Loss of Control. You prefer your body, your team, and your hair to do what you want.
  3. Losing. Life is a mental competition in which you ask, "Am I winning?"
  4. Taking Orders. You prefer to be in charge rather than told what to do.
  5. Slow Deliberation. When people take forever to make a decision, you go crazy.
  6. Irresponsibility. It’s difficult when others procrastinate, forget, or don’t complete their tasks.

TOP 5 ENERGY GAINERS:

  1. Goal Setting. It's gratifying to set achieve goals in your personal and professional life.
  2. Exercise Goals. You move your body when the activity has a clear end result.
  3. Achievement. Accomplishments in the form of work (paid or unpaid) fill your soul.
  4. Organization. Decluttering your home, office, and calendar leaves space to rest.
  5. Celebration. To stay positive, your "to done" list every single day.

Dear Doer, even you need to take care of yourself. When you do, you will be stewarding the life you’ve been given so that you can better steward those under your care, both at home and at work.
